Even with increasing veterinary technician numbers and maximizing tech utilization, we need to explore and establish mid-level practitioners in our profession, a lesson we can also learn from our human medical colleagues. Our physician colleagues could not imagine practicing or handling community medical needs without the support of the 140,000 Physician Assistants or the 355,000 Nurse Practitioners in this Country. Adopting a parallel approach in veterinary medicine would enhance career tracks and longevity in our profession and could eventually spell the difference in access to care in all aspects of our profession, including especially challenged areas such as rural mixed animal, equine, and shelter practice. Along with leveraging increased access to care, mid-level practitioners would provide concomitant increases in practice revenues….as with the expansion of telemedicine, an opportunity, not a threat!
